Camping with Dick Stillinger on Toothaker Island on Mooselookmeguntic Lake

 One of Gramps' favorite place is the Height of Land on route 17 approaching Rangeley. The pull off sports a set of informative signs, wildflowers, an AT crossing, and an absolutely spectacular view of Mooselookmeguntic Lake, complete with views of Toothaker Island and Students Island.  

While gazing at the lake, he said he went camping on Toothaker Island with his lodge -- Wildcat Lodge 1945, of course.  He and Dick Stillinger were sharing a tent. ***In the middle of the night, Stillings became restless, flopping around and waking up Gramps (they were both 14 at the time, of course).   Then Gramps heard a slap. 

And Stillings said, "Got a bug!"

Gramps said, "No, I haven't."


*** edit, July 2024:  While we were still awake, a bug landed on gramps arm, he slapped it and exclaimed, "Got a bug." 

And Stillings replied, "No I haven't."

North Dakota

 We moved to North Dakota in 1946.  I told my brother that this state had an opportunity to cut up the land and sell it to other states to use as landing strips.  I wonder what he thought of me.
